Pause…

Nature Study in November…Swans

IMG_7640.jpg

Perhaps we all need those moments of pause, of peace, more than ever, and I think the kids need those moments too.

Nature walks are wonderful for so many reasons, but this year especially, the chance to disconnect from the noise, to focus on beauty, to look closely and listen carefully, can provide some bit of peace, and a chance to appreciate deeply God’s creation and the gift of life.

On a few recent walks we have been blessed to see some beautiful swans.

We returned home and the kids were eager to learn more about swans.

So we pulled out some books and learned together about these beautiful birds.

Then the kids drew swans in their nature journals.

Discovery Education Streaming is a resource we also love to explore to learn more about wildlife and plants we find on our outdoor adventures.

Their interest in swans lead me to the selection of the wonderful classic, Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White as our next read aloud. Instead of me reading this story however, we enjoyed listening to the author himself as the narrator of the audible version of this beloved tale. My ten year old and eight year old enjoyed playing with thinking putty and coloring as they enjoyed this story.
